A Message from President Finuf
Salem University is excited to announce its entry into the field of integrative health studies! In response to the changing needs of students, communities, and employers, Salem University is expanding its current academic programming by launching the Integrative Health Institute. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted and exacerbated many physical and mental health issues, with more and more people realizing they need to take primary responsibility for their own health and emotional well-being. For many, that means adopting a holistic approach that recognizes that all four dimensions of being human — physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual — are necessary for us to be whole and healthy.
The Integrative Health Institute (IHI) will be led by Bruce Cryer, previously CEO of both The Graduate Institute for Holistic Studies and for HeartMath and will be the first institute of its kind in West Virginia, allowing us to serve students across the globe.
“I am thrilled to be joining Salem University to expand the impact of integrative health studies and reach a far more expansive audience hungry for the kind of education we will provide,” Cryer said. “There are so many people now who crave solutions to the complex issues of health and human survival, especially during these unpredictable times. We believe that by providing access to high-quality integrative education, we will be able to make a positive impact for people all over the United States and even around the world.”
New Areas of Service
Salem University is committed to meeting the educational needs of our community and stakeholders. As we’ve seen those needs change over time and through the pandemic, we recognize that we have an obligation to respond.
“By expanding our current health sciences and education programs to include a whole-person model, we are preparing our students to meet their needs and the future needs of their communities,” said Dr. Karen Ferguson, Provost and VP of Enrollment at Salem.
The new programs will include areas of study like integrative health and healing, health and wellness coaching, learning and thinking, consciousness studies and transpersonal psychology, continuing education and certificate programs.
What’s next?
Salem University has begun the process of curriculum development and faculty and academic leadership selection. We look forward to offering a wide variety of academic and professional programming in integrative health sciences, health coaching, education, and consciousness studies. Thank you
The addition of these new and exciting programs would not be possible without the support of the Salem University community, faculty, and our board of trustees. I am thankful for their ongoing support of these new and innovative programs and their dedication to our mission.
