Have you been considering going back to school to further your teaching education? Has your principal been encouraging teachers to get that master’s degree? Do you want to take your teaching career to the next level, but you’ve been hesitating because you already have so many obligations, with school, family, church and the community? A Master of Education degree from Salem University can get you the training you need quickly and get you started on your exciting new career path.
What is an MEd?
A Master of Education degree builds on the training you received when you earned your bachelor’s degree and gives you credit for the experience you’ve gained working in the classroom. Coursework for the MEd degree program includes topics such as instructional leadership, curriculum development, educational research methods and public-school finance.
Salem University offers an MEd in Educational Leadership and an MEd in Curriculum and Instruction. The Educational Leadership degree program is “an accelerated program that will prepare you to become a principal, district supervisor, or superintendent at every educational level, from pre-kindergarten through adult.”
The Curriculum and Instruction program takes “those who are interested in honing the all-important art of teaching across a range of settings, audiences, and ages”. This program gives students “the knowledge to develop new leadership skills, broaden their opportunities for growth, or step into positions aimed at training and professional development”. There are six specializations within the curriculum and instruction degree program–higher education administration, instructional technology, organizational training and talent development, special education leadership, teacher leadership, and teaching and learning.
What jobs can I get with an MEd?
With a Master of Education degree, you can further your teaching career and quality for leadership positions, such as school principal, assistant principal and dean of a private school. If you choose to stay in the classroom, having an MEd qualifies you for higher pay in most school districts. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, a teacher with a master’s degree earns between $6,200 and $23,000 more annually than a teacher with a bachelor’s degree in education.
You can also use your MEd degree to transition to other careers in education, such as working in charter schools and home schools, in nonprofit education programs, as well as in some higher education and corporate environments. A Master of Education degree is also required in most states for licensure as a school counselor.
Of course, a Master of Education degree is the next step towards earning a doctorate in education, a requirement for most school superintendent positions.
Online learning makes getting your MEd easy
Both of the MEd programs at Salem University are offered online as well as in person. We understand that for teachers with a busy schedule, in-person learning can be difficult. With online learning, you are able to set your learning schedule. You can listen to lectures and complete lessons anytime that’s convenient to you within a broad timeframe. In addition, you don’t have to waste time getting dressed up to go to class, driving to class and finding a place to park. You can learn right from your own living room or home office. You can complete your MEd degree in as few as 11 months.
Online learning doesn’t mean learning in a vacuum. All Salem University students are assigned a designated “support advisor focused on strategies to help you achieve your educational goals”. In addition, the school has a team of academic and financial advisors who are all there to help you achieve your degree. Online students at Salem University have 24/7 access to the school’s online library as well as to tutoring on education topics as well as on life topics like time management, test-taking and stress reduction.
